deadmau5

I attended the deadmau5 concert at the Rogers Centre (or if you’re a true Canadian you still call it the SkyDome). Joel ripped that place apart! In the 22 year history of the building, he is the first Canadian born artist to headline the venue (crazy right?). he packed the place with 20,000+ people and let chaos ensue. The Night started with Manzone & Strong, they were decent but didn’t really get the crowd excited. Next up came one of my favourite’s Idris Elba who (for those of you who don’t know) was the gentleman who played Charles Minor on NBC’s The Office. He ripped some great beats, he was the only one the whole night to sample any Daft Punk so that was a treat to hear a little One More Time. Then the incredible Sydney Blu hit the stage, she was a lot of fun and had the most memorable performance (besides Joel of course). She did a great mix with Michael Jackson’s Dirty Diana which I loved! I am currently downloading her discography. Next up was Crystal Castles and they killed it hard, lots of filthy beats from them actually. They were followed by the one and only MSTRKRFT and they know how to put on a show, they can mix very well. I wish they had played some of their more popular tracks however as i didn’t recognize ANY of the ones they played but oh well, part of the fun.

My friend and I were VIP ticket holders, so we were right on the railing which guarded the stage area. 4ish feet away from the walkway between the large stage where deadmau5 and Crystal Castles played and the middle stage where the rest played. We were right in the middle of the room so it was a great vantage point for either stage which was perfect. My only issue with where we were situated was the amount of potheads that decided to toke up around us was insane (in a smoke free facility mind you) not cool, but i powered through the stupidity and smoke (though my clothes still wreak of it).

Then the main man himself hit the stage. The screens which had been on all night showing shots of the crown and artists suddenly were magnified to be the entire wall. The curtain dropped and there atop his famous cube was deadmau5 sporting the new Cheese Head. The crowd went completely bananas! Joel waved and made hearts with his hands then hit the board and we were off! Starting off the night with Some Cords he blew our heads off. The SkyDome has never sounded so fucking great. Apparently he’s using the footage from that show for a DVD so fingers crossed! About half way into his 2 hour set we were introduced to the one and only Sofi and she came out for Sofi Needs a Ladder and One Trick Pony back to back. Raise Your Weapon was a really great lighter waving moment and then he blew our heads apart with the breakdown, I cannot stress how epic it sounds live. The cube and screen effects were mesmerizing, from my second hand high from all the stoners around me I’m sure that added to my awe of the graphics for such epics as Cthulhu Sleeps where he really went all out. Other screen effects which really rocked it was PacMau5, the Rubiks cube, the starfighter simulator, also his screens for his encore was an arcade displaying the “Continue?” with a 60 second timer from which everyone chanted CONTINUE! until the time ran out and another coin was inserted and he jumped right back into it with a Minecraft homage. Meowingtons of course made a cameo in his screen effects which was met with a huge ovation.

Joel ran out with Sofi to dance right in front of us for a while during her tracks, also during Ghosts N’ Stuff he ran around with a sheet on his head and everyone cheered. He ran around a couple more times with the Mau5 head on and stopped in front of us to pretend to punch his manager (who was standing beside us). After the show had ended he ran out with the head off and jumped around and made hearts and then he layed down at the end of the stage as we all chanted “deadmau5!” over and over. Then he got up and ran to the back and the screen displayed a huge “Game Over” image in 8-bit and the lights came on and it was all over.

This show ran from 7pm-2am which is unheard of for the SkyDome as they generally have a curfew of 11pm and additional hours are very expensive, however this was the last stop of the tour, in his hometown so he was going all out. This marks one of the first massive rave parties in Toronto in almost 20 years because back in the early 90’s it was put to a halt when things were getting out of control and Toronto was a huge part in the rave scene in those days but laws were created and curfews were made so it buried the big party style. Then in one night deadmau5 brought it all back with a party of 20,000+ people to house music in a massive venue. He hopefully will pave the way for other dubstep and house artists to come here and expand the genre to its former success in Canada.

I was surprised at the amount of security and police. By that I mean there was hardly any. I saw 4 cops the entire night and a lot of security because we were right at the stage but still, for what it was it was a very behaved party, booze was being sold but I didn’t actually see anyone crazy drunk just people had a beer or two and some people smoked weed but it wasn’t as bad as I expected it to be for this genre. I’m just always a downer about it of course. No one got arrested that I saw or heard and no one had any fights or anything while moshing and whatever. It was a great start to something incredible for Toronto and the house music scene here. Fun time was had by all and i would totally do it again!

I have Mau5 fever.

deadmau5 ^_^
They gave everyone ears to wear :P
I have a bunch of videos and stories to tell, which shall require a LOT of posts, but it will have to wait as I am in a lot of pain from dancing for like 6 hours, and standing forever and just general exhaustion of being so damn excited
I was 4 feet from every act on that stage which is quite the list
However I shall dive into all of that tomorrow
For now all I will say is being 4 feet away from Sofi’s incredible ass made my night. She shook it in my face. xD
